Obituary for Dr. Jayni Flores (Flores)
The Rosary for Dr. Jayni Flores, 66, of Portales will be recited at 9:00 AM, Tues., Jan. 16, 2018 at St. Helen Catholic Church. The Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 10:00 AM with Fr. Sotero Sena officiating. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Jimmy Aranda, Jr., Pete Corrales, Jr., John Corrales, Tony Flores, Randy Ornelas and Daniel Lopez, Jr. serving as pallbearers. Chris Flores, Miguel Flores, Alex Garcia, Atrayo Garcia, Devyn Garcia, Joshua Chavez, Jr. and Elario Aranda will be honorary pallbearers.
Laura Jane Flores, known to everyone as Jane or Jayni, was born Sept. 30, 1951 in Portales, to the home of Cecilia (Baros) and Miguel Antonio Flores, and died Jan. 11, 2018 in Portales. Dr. Flores was a 1968 graduate of Portales High School. Following graduation, she attended Eastern New Mexico University, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Education and Bi-lingual Education. For a time she taught in Clovis, while she completed her Master's Degree. She went on to earn a PhD from New Mexico State University. Dr. Flores taught at the Flagstaff campus of Arizona State University, and then became Dean of Education at Mesa Community College. She eventually returned to New Mexico, and taught at Clovis Community College before moving to Las Vegas, NM to teach at Highlands University. Later, she taught at the Rio Rancho branch of Highlands. Dr. Flores retired in 2014. In addition to her teaching positions, she worked at different times as office manager at LaCasa in Roswell, and at James Polk Bank where she taught Spanish to the employees.
Jayni was a very devout Catholic, and taught RCIC (Right of Christian Initiation for Children) classes at St. Helen and later at Sacred Heart in Clovis. Family was very important to Dr. Flores. Since she never had children of her own, she was very devoted to her nieces and nephews.
She is survived by a brother, Joe Flores and his wife, Abrora of Portales; two sisters-in-law, Betty (Mrs. Ramon) Flores of Portales and Florinda (Mrs. Crecenio) Flores of Roswell, NM; and numerous nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and nephews and even great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ramon, Crecencio and Faustino Flores and a sister and brother-in-law, Corina and Pete Corralez.
