Obituary for Stanley Harrison

Stanley Harrison
Funeral services for Stanley Harrison, 68, of Lubbock, TX will be at 1:00 P.M., Wed., May 23,
2018 in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow in the Eiland Cemetery near Arch, NM.
Stanley Ben Harrison was born Aug. 29, 1949, in Lubbock, TX to the home of Eva Mae (Grizzle)
and Gordon Stanley Harrison and died May 16, 2018 in Lubbock, TX where he had been living
for the past three years.
Stan grew up in the Arch community and was a faithful member of Arch Baptist Church. He
graduated from Portales High School in 1967. While he was still in high school, he earned his
private pilot's license. After graduating, he went on to attend Eastern New Mexico University and
New Mexico State University for a short time before enlisting in the U.S Army in Sept. 1969. On
December 22nd, 1970, Stan married Melanie Precure, and in a few years they would become a
family of 7; eventually raising 5 boys.
During his time in service, he was stationed in Germany and served 2 years. After his honorable
discharge, he was eager to return back to Arch and start a life with Melanie. He joined the
National Peanut Growers Association and was soon voted in as President. He remained in
office from 1976 till 1980. Shortly after stepping down from the NPGA, he was nominated to run
for State Senate and only missed getting into office by a handful of votes. Foregoing any future
opportunity to become a statesman, he decided instead to put his passion of flying to work and
founded “Valley Flying Spraying Services” around 1980 which was an aerial application
business that served local farmers throughout Eastern New Mexico for the next several years.
In the early 80's, he also began working with a charter flight service and provided transportation
for Lonnie Allsup and Jeff Wilson. He also flew for UPS before becoming an airline pilot for
Continental Airlines in the mid 1980's. After nearly 20 years with the company, he retired in
2006. Following his retirement, Stan took care of his mother for several years. For the past three
years he had been a resident of Raider Ranch in Lubbock where he was endeared by staff
members and nurses alike. Being a gregarious man, Stan never met a stranger and was always
generous to help those around him in any way he was able.
He is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, Joel Harrison of Dallas, TX, John and
Carol Harrison of Midland, TX, Jordan and Hannah Harrison of Alto, NM and James Harrison of
Dallas, TX; two grandchildren, Kensey and Hailey Harrison; a "sister" and "brother-in-law" Loya
and Michel Cobb of Lubbock. He was preceded in death by both of his parents, and a son,
Jared Harrison who died in 1999. Pallbearers will be Bill Walker, Garth Grizzle, and his four
sons. Honorary Pallbearers are the friends of Arch Baptist Church and the surrounding
communities of Arch and Portales.
