Obituary for Frederick "Fred" Hensley

Frederick "Fred"  Hensley
Memorial services for Frederick Turner Hensley, 81, formerly of Clovis and Portales will be at 10:00 AM, Mon., Oct. 29, 2018 at the Living Stones Community Nazarene Church in Clovis with Pastor Dale Wesley officiating. Burial of Judge Hensley's cremated remains will be in the Portales Cemetery with other family members.
Frederick Turner Hensley was born Oct. 11, 1936 in Portales, and died Oct. 1, 2018 in Austin, TX where he had been living for the past few years. Fred was a 1954 graduate of Portales High School where he played football and basketball. He began his college career at Oklahoma State University, and joined Sigma Nu fraternity. His education was interrupted by a car accident, and he completed his bachelor's degree in accounting at Eastern New Mexico University in 1960. He went on to study at the University of New Mexico in 1961, where he studied law. Fred completed his law degree at Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1964. While in law school, he was a member and president of the Delta Theta Phi legal fraternity and president of Chicago Kent College of Law Student Bar Association from 1963-64.
Following his graduation, he returned to Santa Fe, where he was court clerk for Justice David Chavez, Jr. in the state Supreme Court. From 1966 to 1967 he was Special Assistant Attorney General for the sate Engineer's office in Santa Fe. When his father was appointed as Chief Justice of the Court of Appeals, and moved to Santa Fe, Fred moved to Portales to enter private practice. In 1972 he was elected as District Attorney for the Ninth Judicial District, and served in that capacity until being elected as District Judge in 1976.
Judge Hensley was a graduated of the National College of District Attorneys in Houston, TX. He also completed the courses at the National Judicial College in Reno, NV and served as a faculty advisor in the summer of 1983. Fred also taught Criminal Law courses for a number of years at both Clovis Community College and on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University. Fred retired in 1996, but continued to act as Judge Pro Tem and also oversaw Domestic Violence cases for several more years. He retired fully in the early 2000's.
On Aug. 15, 1964 in Chicago, IL he was married to Linda Mueller. The couple has three children. For many years he served as Sunday School teacher and board member for Living Stones Community Nazarene Church in Clovis. Fred was a member of Rotary International and served as president of the Portales club in 1969. He was very active with the United Way and the American Cancer Society. Fred was an avid runner, and played handball.
He is survived by Linda, his wife of 54 years currently of Austin, TX; a son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Shelly Hensley of Denver, CO; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Tom Stone and Amy and Jack Ingram both of Austin, TX; eight grandchildren, Olivia, Charlie and Will Stone, Ava, Eli Hudson Ingram, and Hagan and Cate Hensley; and two brothers, Jackson Hensley of Springfield, IL and Bill Hensley of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by both of his parents.
